Amsterdam Travel: Noordermarkt Flea Market

On Mondays, a small but perfectly formed flea market pops up in Noordermarkt which stands at the foot of the bulky but impressive Noorderkerk. This is one of my favourite corners of Amsterdam, with Cafe Winkel on the corner serving the best apple pie in the city and then the long Lindengracht around the corner, which has some great restaurants and offers views down beautiful narrow Jordaan alleyways (some of which I walked down as part of the Eating Amsterdam food tour).
While I love the flea market at Waterlooplein, this one is on a much smaller scale and has a little more character.. and perhaps a little less crap. You can still rummage in piles of vintage clothes, but you could also go here and spot a beautifully restored item of mid-century furniture. I have never gone to Noordermarkt and walked away without an old dress or musty-smelling shirt purchased for under €10.00. Now that is a good way to spend a Monday morning.
And there are snacks. Surinam, Vietnamese, Dutch and more. And if they don't satisfy your hunger pangs then there are a number of good cafes looking onto the market and if all else fails there's Cafe Winkel...
