Welcome to a post on a topic I thought I'd never write about: The best hashtags for writers.

Honestly, if my blog were a colour I think it would pink. I quite like pink. It has lots of different shades and tones and meanings. If the mass of all my other blogs is a menage of pink that blends into a sort of pastelly middle-of-the-road pink, this one would stand out as a bright neon fuchsia. This is because it's really not my usual type of blog post. However, as an indie author, trying to build a business out of writing fiction, I have made a decision to share more posts relating to the business and marketing side of life as an independent author in the hope that it helps other writers. I've also recently started back at square one with social media trying to build a platform for WriteNOW Cards and while it's going well on some platforms it's also been slow going on others. One of the things I've had to do is re-think how I use writing hashtags (both on Instagram and Twitter) from being almost offended by too many hashtags in a tweet to now seeing that they open doors to communities and create connections between other writers. So that's why I've created this list of the best Twitter hashtags for writers.

The Best Hashtags for Writers

Over the months I've been using Twitter differently (both as WriteNOW Cards and as As the Bird flies) I've discovered more hashtags than I ever imagined existing, and most of them are active and effective ways to share your work, promote your books, and meet and engage with other writers. I suspect this list will change in the future and will need adding to a number of times, but for now, please find below a list of the Twitter hashtags writers should use and be aware of. This is a list of over 100 writing hashtags so obviously some will have more klout than others. I highly recommend you experiment with them to find which work best for you. I've highlighted in bold the ones I find work best both in terms of generating engagement but also connecting with like-minded people or finding things I enjoyed reading.

One final tip on Twitter hashtags for writers...

One important thing I want to add about hashtags for writers before you go and rub out the marking on your phone's #-key, don't be afraid to create and use your own writing hashtags. They are useful for collating your own work and themes of your work. I use #writenowcards to track all the tweets I send featuring one of my writing affirmations and on my personal Twitter account I use my own writer hashtag #Frankiewrites to track when I've shared something I've written. I do this so I can go back and find these tweets easily and it's also if someone else wants to read something else I've written then can do so easily. Don't just use hashtags to try and sell something, but to connect and to be a person on Twitter. I find that works much better... and let's face it that's just a nicer way to be.
